Semarang │(August 29, 2017) 307 new mahasantri (female college students studying at pesantren) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus) in the academic year 2017/18 has begun living and studying at the student dormitory (rusunawa) of Unimus in order to join a year-long program of KH Sahlan Rosjidi All-female Pesantren located in the dormitory. Representative of the students’ parents has officially entrusted the children to Unimus in a ceremonial event entitled “welcome speech”, taking place in the hall of the 3-floor dormitory building. The event was held simultaneously with the ceremony of operating license handover by the regional office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Semarang City (Kantor Kemenag Kota Semarang). Attending the event were the Division Head of Administration of Semarang City (Drs. H. Labib, MM) who represented the head of regional office of the Minstry of Religious Affairs, Rector of Unimus (Prof. Dr. Masrukhi, M.Pd), Vice Rector II of Unimus (Dr. Sri Rejeki., M.Kep, Sp.Mat), Vice Rector III of Unimus (Drs. Syamsudi Raharjo., M.M., M.T.) and Unimus’ other senior leaders.

Rohmat Suprapto, S.Ag, Msi, the director of KH Sahlan Rosjidi All-female Pesantren, also the Chairman of the Institute of Islamic and Muhammadiyah Studies (LSIK) at Unimus, in the event stated there were 307 new mahasantri that would stay and study in the pesantren. “During they stay and study in the pesantren, they (mahasantri) will learn 4 competences including religious competence (Al Qur’an recitation, shalat, short surahs memorizing), leadership competence (leadership character building such being honest, resilient, and discipline), language competence (Arabic and English comprehensions), and personal competence (character building such as akhlaq and manners)” he stated.

Rector of Unimus on that occasion said that not all new students of Unimus in 2017 were accepted in the pesantren; those accepted were only 300s. Their stay would be only a year and thus after that they would be replace by new students in 2018. “In the pesantren, santri, the new students will get education and teachings, as well as practice Islamic values taught in here. The pesantren will create excellent scholars and cadres of the nation” Prof. Masrukhi explained.

Meanwhile, Drs. Labib expressed his appreciation to Unimus for the pesantren new enrollment so that the license could be given. “Basically, pesantren and religious education in the society directly helps the Ministry of Religious Affairs to improve the nation’s intelligence and teach religious values,” Drs. Labib stated. The operating license was handed-over symbolically by the dormitory key. It was received by Dr. Syamsudi Raharjo, M.M., M.T., as the Vice Rector III (Vice Rector for student affairs).
