Semarang ¦ UNIMUS (December 23, 2017) Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus) has just held the Unimus Open Tennis Tournament 2017 on December 22-23, 2017, located in the tennis court of Unimus. The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. H. Masrukhi, M.Pd., the Rector of Unimus, Yayuk Basuki, the country’s tennis maestro, who is also a member Commission X of the People’s Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia, and Gurun Risyadmoko, the Head of the Office of Youth and Sports Semarang City (representing the City Mayor) in Unimus Tennis Court on Friday (December 22, 2017).

Two teams of Mens’ Doubles were playing in the Unimus Open Tennis Tournament

Held for the first time, the tournament was to win Semarang City Mayor trophy, Yayuk Basuk trophy, Chairman of Muhammadiyah Provincial Executive Board trophy, and Unimus Rector trophy. Participating the event were 9 contingents representing some Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Boards and Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta Provinces. They were Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Board of Sukoharjo, Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Board of Kendal, Unimus A, Unimus B, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP), Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD), Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo. There were three categories of championships, i.e. Team of Men’s Doubles of over 51 years old, of 41-50 years old, and with no age restriction.

Yayuk Basuki and Prof. Masrukhi both stated that the tennis tournament, held to celebrate Muhammadiyah’s 105th anniversary was important to enliven and excite again sports, especially tennis, at regional levels. “There is a declining development of tennis in Indonesia nowadays so that we needs to make it exciting again, event at regional and local levels as potential talents are mostly from small towns, not from big cities, stated Yayuk. “This tournament has been long designed and will be a medium to build and maintain friendship between Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Boards and Muhammadiyah higher education institutions in Central Java and Yogyakarta through sports,” added the Rector.

Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Board of Sukoharjo successfully became the first winners, meanwhile team of UMP was the second, and Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Boards of Sukoharjo and Kendal the third. Sukojo, the committe chairman, stated that the tournament would become an annual event for Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions and Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Board in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta, as a medium for talent scouting as well as maintaining friendship.
