Prof. Dato’ Dr. Abd Rahim shared knowledge about public health system and health in connection with family medical policies in Malaysia, including those on maternal mortality. He stated that both maternal and infant mortality rates were low in Malaysia, compared to those in Indonesia. According to him, mother mortality could be prevented by doing holistic investigations so that it wouldn’t recur. “In Malaysia, when a mother passes away when giving birth at clinic, community health center, or any other health service, it is treated as a very special occurence that will be recorded and reported to even the Ministry of Health of Malaysia. Then, a comprehensive investigation will be conducted in order to find out the cause of it so that it won’t recur in the future,” he explained, answering a student’s question on why maternal mortality rate in Malaysia has been very low. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Abd Rahim persuaded Indonesian people (including the government) to treat seriously every maternal mortality case. “An attempt to decrease maternal mortality rate will be more successful if supported with improved health facilities, human resources, and medical forces’ expertises”.
