The establishment of the University of Muhammadiyah Semarang was firstly conducted by Muhammadiyah’s Provincial Executive Board of Central Java in 1996. It was followed up by forming a Founding Committee of the University of Muhammadiyah Semarang according to Decree of the Provincial Executive Board of Central Java No. SK.PW/III.B/9.6/001/1997.

Through an intensive preparation that includes regular meetings, a decision was taken in regard with the establishment of a Higher Education in form of University. On August 4, 1999 Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia issued Operational License no. 139/D/O/1999 for the University of Muhammadiyah Semarang.

There were 14 study programs that got an operational permit in 1999, such as Undergraduate Degree in Public Health, Undergraduate Degree in Statistics, Undergraduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Diploma III in Mechanical Engineering, Undergraduate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Diploma III in Electrical Engineering, Undergraduate Degree in Food Technology, Undergraduate Degree in Agricultural Technology, Undergraduate Degree in Management, Undergraduate Degree in Company Administration, Undergraduate Degree in Accounting, Undergraduate Degree in English, Diploma III in English, and Diploma III in Japanese.

In the second year, mandated by a Tanwir congress of the Provincial Executive Board in Karanganyar City, all institutions under Muhammadiyah in Semarang had to merge into the University of Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus). This was legalized by Decree of Muhammadiyah’s Provincial Executive Board of Central Java No. III.B/1.A/087/2001.

In terms of administration, the merger of Nursing Academy, Nutrition Academy, and Health Analyst Academy was carried out in 2002 and it was legalized by Minister of Education and Culture Decree No. 28/D/O/2005. Since then, Diploma III in Nursing, Diploma III in Nutrition, and Diploma III in Health Analyst were officially open.

In the 2006/2007 academic year, Unimus opened a new study program, Diploma III in Midwifery according to the Operational Permit No. 2294/D/T/2006. In the 2008/2009 academic year, Unimus had several new study programs, such as Undergraduate Degree in Accounting (Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 2092/D/T/2008), Undergraduate Degree in Medical Education (Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 2940/D/T/2008); Nurse Professional Program (Director General of Higher Education Decree No.267/D/O/2008); Undergraduate Degree in Mathematics Education (Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 1040/D/T2009); Undergraduate Degree in English Education (Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 1271/D/T/2009); Diploma IV in Health Analyst (Director General of Higher Education Decree No.1941/D/T/2009); and Undergraduate Degree in Nutrition science (Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 218/D/O/2010). In the 2012/2013 academic year, UNIMUS opened Undergraduate Degree in Chemical Education (Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 209/E/O/2013). Since 2014, UNIMUS have had 22 study programs that consist of 2 professional programs, 15 undergraduate programs, 1 Diploma IV program, and 4 Diploma III programs.
