Semarang | Unimus (July 10, 2018)  Knowledge and skills a nurse has in relation to Basic Trauma and Cardiac Life Support (BT&CLS) are parts of the requirements to become a professional nurse. Nurses are health workers in the front line in providing health services based on the current developments of technology and nursing science. Therefore, nurses are always demanded to improve knowledge in order to match with the most recent technological development in the field of health based on either national or international standard in terms of facility completeness and procedure properness in operation every medical equipment. This is what motivated the Diploma III Program in Nursing of the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences (Fikkes) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus) in collaboration with Unimus Commisariate Executive Board of Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI) and Emergency Ambulance Foundation (Yayasan Ambulan Gawat Darurat/AGD) 118 to hold a training on BT & CLS. The foundation was selected for having been certified by the American Surgeon Association, Indonesian Surgeon Association, and Indonesian Internal Disease Experts Association, and Indonesian National Nurses Association.

“The training was attended by 80 participants consisting of students of Diploma III program in Nursing, alumni of Nursing Program at Unimus, and Nursing students from some other institutions, with 8 trainers from the Emergency Ambulance Foundation” Ns. Satriya Pranata, M.Kep, the committee chairman, explained. “The training on Basic Trauma and Cardiac Life Support (BT&CLS) and simulation on disaster management will be held for five days starting from today (July 10) and will be ended on July 14, 2018,” he added, taking place in the Nursing Research Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. The opening ceremony has been done, led by Dr. Ali Rosidi, M.Si, as the Vice Dean II, representing the dean, witnessed by Ns. Chanif, MNS, Head of Diploma III program in Nursing and chairman of Unimus PPNI, and IPW Agung, S.Lep., the person in charge of the training from AGD 118.

“Training on Basic Trauma and Cardiac Life Support (BT & CLS) is aimed at equipping the graduates of Nursing Program with basic skills dealing with traumatic patients as the main requirement for a nursing working at a hospital, clinic, or any other health facilities,” Ns. Chanif, MNS revealed. “Another reason is most of health service providers ask certificates of BT & CLS as proves that the applicants have ever taken the trainings and also already had knowledge and skills in employee recruitment,” he asserted. “Nurses also need to be qualified in patient management with emergency due to cardiac arrest, heart trauma, so that they can help the patients and prevent morbidity in emergency cases,” he ended.

During the five-day training, the participants will get materials on Integrated Emergency Countermeasure System (Sistem Penanggulangan Gawat Darurat Terpadu/SPGDT), Basic Life Support, Initial assessment, stabilization of airway and breathing, Cardiovascular Emergency Management, Electrocardiography (EKG), Heart and Lung Resuscitation, DC Shock, Trauma and Fracture Management, Shock and Toxication Management, and Musculoskeletal and Spinal Cord Stabilization. The agenda will include classroom learning, discussion, practices, and evaluations (written and oral evaluations) and disaster management simulation.
