Oath-taking procession involving students of Nursing and Midwifery Programs at Unimus

Semarang ¦Capping Day or oath-taking ceremony by Nursing and Midwifery students is the early stage that they have to take before practicing in medical clinics, hospitals, or other health providers, as a preparation to entering the professional world. It is what 280 students of Unimus Faculty of Health and Nursing Sciences, consisting of 95 students of D3 Program in Nursing, 168 students of Undergraduate Program in Nursing and 17 students of D3 Program in Midwifery, have just dealt with.

They attended a Capping Day and general lecture themed “Inter-professional Collaboration and Patient Safety in Health Care System”. The event was held in Grasia Hotel Semarang on April 17, 2018. Several senior leaders of Unimus, such as Prof. Dr. Masrukhi., M.Pd. (Rector), Dr. Budi Santosa., M.Si.Med. (Dean of Unimus Faculty of Health and Nursing Sciences), program heads secretary within Unimus Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, representatives of professional organizations (Indonesia National Nurses Association and Indonesian Midwives Association), representatives of hospitals in Semarang, and the students’ parents.

The event was opened by Dr. Budi Santosa., M.Si.Med., who stated that the oath-taking ceremony became a momentum to boost the spirit and comprehensions dealing with the primary duty and function of a nurse and a midwife who would in the future directly serve the society. “The oath-taking momentum should become a foundation to improve their performances as nurses and midwives. As health workers, you should keep the oath that has been taken, such as by keeping the patients’ credential information,” he added. Rector of Unimus in his welcome speech stated that the oath-taking ceremony became the starting point of the students to take the following steps, such as doing clinical practices in various medical institutions and the society in general. “When practicing in a clinic, the student will be in touch with the community directly, so do not forget to be consistent with Islamic and religious values,” the Rector advised.

During the procession, the students were taking the oath about obligations that they had to deal with as efforts to provide services to the patients. Details of the oath consisted oaths to not discriminate patients, to put in the first place the patients and keep their confidential information. The procession was witnessed by some religious leaders and the Dean of Unimus Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences. In the event, an official capping ceremony for female students and a symbolic pin attaching ceremony by the head of the study programs were also held.

Dr. Edy Wuryanto, M.Kep., chairman of Indonesia National Nurses Association and lecturer at Unimus, during material presentationAfter the oath-taking procession, the first session of the general lecture was delivered by Dr. Edy Wuryanto, M.Kep, chairman of Indonesia National Nurses Association of Central Java area, also one of Unimus Nursing lecturer. In the presentation, he explained about inter-professional collaboration, which was about how to build good cooperation between health-related professions on clinical service level. Meanwhile, the second topic on “Patient Safety in Health Care System” was delivered by Ns. Sunarto, SST, S.Kep, from the Dr. Kariadi General Hospital Medical Center. He stated that the medical care providers were demanded to understand the patients’ safety when taking care of them. The students looked enthusiastic and interested in the material given, for it directly described the patient safety standard and how to developed good soft skills for health workers.

This event was a routine agenda of Nursing and Midwifery study programs in accordance with equipping the students with knowledge ahead of practicing in the society. Through this event, Unimus expects to create professional and excellent nurses and midwives in terms of science, skills, and Islam.
