Semarang | Muhammadiyah, one of the biggest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, have been in charge with community empowerment for a century, in either economic, educational, or health sector. Deal with it, Muhammadiyah operates under the work ethics and spirits of Surah al-Maun and Surah al-Ashr, which have been emphasized for a long time Kiai Haji Ahmad Dahlan, the Founding Father. The spirits themselves are reviewed by Prof. Dr. H. Zakiyyudin Baidhawy, M.Ag., as written in his book “Etika Muhammadiyah dan Spirit Peradaban (Muhammadiyah Ethics and the Spirit of Civilization)”. And, Unimus got a great opportunity review the book with the Director of Postgraduate Education of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga, at At Taqwa Muhammadiyah Mosque, Semarang on Thursday, February 8, 2018. Several senior leaders at Unimus, such as Dr. Sri Darmawati, M.Si. (Vice Rector I), Dr. Hj. Sri Rejeki, S.Kp, M.Kep, Sp.Mat. (Vice Rector II), and Drs. Samsudi Rahardjo, M.M., M.T., (Vice Rector III) attended the event to participate as well as appreciate the event.
Zakiyyudin said that the movement of Muhammadiyah in total was well-known as the trident of feeding, schooling, and healing. In the aspect of education, Muhammadiyah has established institutions of education, such as higher big education institutions, including Unimus. Muhammadiyah has also had health clinics and hospitals (aspect of health), and Lazismu in the socio-economic aspect.
“The seriousness of Kiai Dahlan in applying the work ethics of Surah al-Mulk and Surah al–Ashr can be seen from the length of time that he needed to teach both Surahs. “Surah al-Ma’un was taught for 3 months continuously; meanwhile, Surah al-Ashr was taught for 7 months. That’s why he’s known as Kiai of al-Ashr.” he reviewed.
In Al-Maun work ethics, Zakiyyudin stated that Muslims had to have a critical attitude and awareness on the surroundings. For instance, Kiai Dahlan once took his students to go outside to see the surroundings, where there were a lot of orphans.
He didn’t let the orphans go home without taking food, drinks, and clothes that they needed. Meanwhile, Al-Ashr work ethics contain what alternatives can be offered as a solution for something that has been criticized previously. He ethics are what generate Muhammadiyah to be autonomous and powerful in the society. In other words, Al-Ashr gives an answer or shows Muhammadiyah’s awareness.
The studies are expected able to corroborate the roles of Muhammadiyah’s cadres and activies in the development of Muhammadiyah with the spirit of Progressive Islam (Islam Berkemajuan). The spirit of hard work and smart work will become Muhammadiyah’s significant contribution toward the nation.”
